Troops under Operation Hadin Kai have successfully repelled a midnight assault by insurgents on a military base in Kukareta, Yobe State, killing 24 attackers in the process.
The confrontation, which began shortly after midnight on Thursday, reportedly lasted about three hours before the troops overpowered the insurgents and forced them to retreat.
Confirming the incident, the task force’s spokesperson, Sani Uba, said soldiers responded swiftly with coordinated defensive and offensive actions that neutralised a significant number of the attackers and disrupted their operation.
According to him, the troops recovered a cache of weapons and ammunition from the scene, including 18 AK-47 rifles, three General Purpose Machine Guns, two PKT guns, three RPG launchers, two mortar tubes, and several hand grenades.
He added that two soldiers sustained injuries during the exchange but have since been stabilised, while one armoured vehicle was damaged.
The military has since launched follow-up operations aimed at tracking down fleeing insurgents and recovering additional weapons.
