Gunmen have killed a pastor and three members of his family during a late-night attack on Gako Village in Riyom Local Government Area of Plateau State, deepening concerns over rising insecurity in the region.
The victims were identified as Rev. Ayuba Choji, his wife, and their two children. Residents said the attackers stormed the community at about 11 p.m., firing weapons and forcing people to flee their homes.
Eyewitnesses described the incident as chaotic, with residents running for safety as the assailants carried out the attack. Community members say such incidents have become frequent, leaving many people living in fear and unable to carry out daily activities like farming.
Local leaders noted that the attackers appear to be adopting more coordinated strategies, often splitting into groups during operations. While some target residents, others reportedly destroy farms or block access routes to prevent escape or intervention.
In nearby Barkin Ladi, farmlands have also suffered significant damage in recent days, with crops such as maize, pepper, and vegetables destroyed, further worsening the situation for farmers.
The latest attack has increased tension across affected communities, with residents calling on security agencies to take stronger action to protect lives and livelihoods.
Authorities have yet to announce any arrests, but residents continue to urge urgent intervention to prevent further violence in the state.
