Residents of Jemesi Papa Street in the Igando area of Lagos State were left shocked after a tragic incident involving the death of a 10-year-old girl named Faith, who was reportedly killed by her adoptive parents.
Drivetvnews gathered that the suspects, identified as Paul Onyeama and Adline Ogbonna, were apprehended by local youths before being taken into police custody. They are accused of repeatedly abusing the child over a period of time, which allegedly led to her death.
According to witnesses, the young girl had been subjected to ongoing mistreatment, including physical violence and being forced to carry out tasks beyond her age. Reports indicate that she had also been ill for about two weeks before the fatal incident, yet the alleged abuse did not stop.
A community member, Adekunle Taofeek, stated that the couple reportedly beat the child severely despite her weakened condition. Sadly, she did not survive the assault.
After her death on Sunday, the couple allegedly kept her body inside their home and attempted to continue their normal activities to avoid suspicion. It was gathered that the woman was seen cooking the next morning, while the man allegedly went out to find a tricycle, possibly to dispose of the body.
Concerned neighbors became suspicious when the child was not seen and raised an alarm. Youths in the area quickly intervened, preventing the couple from moving the body and handing them over to the police.
During questioning, the suspects claimed that the child died while receiving treatment at a hospital. However, this account was contradicted by medical personnel and initial police findings, which suggested that the girl was already dead before she was taken to the clinic.
A police source confirmed that the case will be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for further investigation.
This incident has drawn attention to the growing concern over cases of severe domestic abuse involving children in Lagos State.
