Security agencies have launched a rescue operation after six students of the Faculty of Engineering at Nasarawa State University, Keffi, were abducted by suspected gunmen in Nasarawa State.
The students were reportedly kidnapped on Wednesday night after armed men invaded a student lodge located in Anguwar Ninzo, Gudi, on the outskirts of the community.
The spokesperson for the Nasarawa State Police Command, Ramhan Nansel, confirmed the incident in a statement issued in Lafia on Thursday.
According to the police, the command received a distress call around 9 p.m. on May 6, reporting that unidentified gunmen had stormed the lodge and taken away several students.
Police said six victims have so far been identified, all of them students of the Faculty of Engineering, Gudi Campus of Nasarawa State University, alongside another visitor who was at the lodge during the attack.
Following the incident, the Commissioner of Police, Shetima Jauro Mohammed, visited the scene to assess the situation and reassure residents and members of the university community that efforts were ongoing to rescue the victims safely.
The police command added that the Area Commander in Akwanga had been redeployed to coordinate operations in the area pending the release of the abducted students.
A joint security team involving the police, Department of State Services, military, Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps, vigilante groups, and other tactical units has also been mobilised to track down the kidnappers.
Authorities urged residents to remain calm and security conscious while encouraging anyone with useful information to report to the nearest security agency.
