New Arthur Okonkwo has expressed excitement over the possibility of making his debut for the Nigeria national football team ahead of upcoming international fixtures later this month.
The 24-year-old goalkeeper recently became eligible to represent Nigeria after FIFA approved his switch from England, where he previously featured at youth level during his time with England national under-18 football team.
Okonkwo, who currently plays for Wrexham A.F.C., said he is honoured by the opportunity to represent Nigeria and is looking forward to wearing the national colours for the first time.
“It’s an honour being given the opportunity to play for your country. I am so excited and can’t wait,” he said in a video shared by the Nigeria Football Federation.
The goalkeeper reportedly held talks with Super Eagles coach Eric Chelle in London during the 2025 Unity Cup tournament, which Nigeria won.
Okonkwo joins a growing list of goalkeepers competing for a place in the national team, including Stanley Nwabali, Francis Uzoho, Maduka Okoye and Amas Obasogie.
A product of Arsenal F.C.’s academy, Okonkwo previously had loan spells with Crewe Alexandra F.C. and SK Sturm Graz before joining Wrexham.
Since arriving at the club, he has established himself as first-choice goalkeeper and played a key role in their recent promotions. He made 44 appearances this season and recorded 10 clean sheets across all competitions.
