An Osun State High Court has sentenced a 30-year-old man, Taiwo Agboola, to death by hanging for the murder of a 62-year-old woman, Mrs. Jadesola Olubayo.
Drivetvnews gathered that the incident occurred on October 11, 2023, at a palm oil processing site located in Olokemeji Village, Ifetedo, in Ife South Local Government Area of Osun State.
Agboola was arraigned on charges bordering on attempted rape, indecent assault and murder under the Criminal Code Laws of Osun State.
During the trial, the prosecution presented four witnesses, while the defendant testified in his own defence without calling additional witnesses.
Delivering judgment, Justice Adedapo Adeniji ruled that the prosecution proved the case beyond reasonable doubt and found the defendant guilty on all counts.
According to evidence presented before the court, the deceased had gone to the palm oil processing site with her granddaughter, Latifat Adeyemo, when the convict allegedly appeared naked and chased the two women.
The witness told the court that while attempting to escape and seek help, Agboola overpowered the elderly woman. She later returned to the scene with assistance and discovered that the victim had been stripped and attacked with a stone and stick, leading to her death.
The court heard that the suspect initially fled the area but was later apprehended by residents and handed over to the police.
Following his conviction, the court sentenced Agboola to 14 years imprisonment for attempted rape, two years imprisonment for indecent assault, and death by hanging for murder.
