Several students were reportedly injured during the 2026 Children’s Day celebration at Dr Ogbemudia Stadium after tear gas was allegedly fired during a crowd disturbance.

According to reports, some students collapsed after inhaling the gas, while others sustained injuries during the confusion that followed. A few were said to have been hit by stones allegedly thrown during the disorder.

The injured students were reportedly taken to Edo Specialist Hospital for treatment.

Witnesses at the event said panic broke out after tear gas was released by a security operative or bouncer attempting to control the crowd near one of the stadium gates.

In response to the incident, the Edo State Government issued a statement denying claims circulating online that suggested a wider security breakdown.

The government explained that the stadium experienced an unusually large turnout of students for the Children’s Day celebration, leading to overcrowding and disorder at one of the entrances.

According to the statement signed by Dr. Patrick Ebojele, Chief Press Secretary to Governor Monday Okpebholo, the situation escalated into a stampede-like scene, prompting one of the bouncers to deploy tear gas in an attempt to disperse the crowd.

The statement added that Dennis Idahosa, who was present at the stadium, immediately assisted affected students and coordinated emergency responses.

Authorities said students who required medical attention were treated and later reunited with their families.

The Edo State Government also confirmed that investigations had begun and that the security personnel involved was being questioned by the police.

Officials urged residents and social media users to avoid spreading unverified information capable of causing panic, while reiterating the government’s commitment to the safety and welfare of children across the state.
