The Anambra State Government has vowed to ensure justice for a 16-year-old girl who was allegedly subjected to repeated sexual abuse by eight men, including her guardian, in Nawfia Community, Njikoka Local Government Area of the state.
The Commissioner for Women Affairs and Social Welfare, Esther Onyekesi, made the pledge after the teenager was brought to her office in Awka, expressing outrage over the disturbing allegations.
According to the commissioner, the government is determined to ensure that all individuals found culpable face the full weight of the law, describing the incident as unacceptable and deeply troubling.
A medical report presented to the ministry reportedly confirmed that the teenager is two months pregnant, allegedly as a result of the repeated assaults.
The case was brought to the attention of the ministry through a Catholic priest in Nawfia who intervened after learning about the victim’s situation.
Speaking during the meeting, Onyekesi condemned the abuse and called on men to protect women and young girls rather than exploit their vulnerability. She also assured the victim of her safety and the government’s commitment to pursuing justice.
Narrating her ordeal, the teenager alleged that her guardian repeatedly assaulted her over an extended period and that several other men later became involved in the abuse.
She disclosed that a concerned individual helped her escape from the situation last week, leading to the arrest of some suspects before she was taken into protective care.
The victim further revealed that her guardian’s wife, who reportedly suffers from a stroke, was unable to intervene during the period of abuse.
According to her account, police officers at the Nawfia Division have arrested two suspects in connection with the case, while six others remain at large.
Authorities confirmed that investigations are ongoing, with efforts underway to apprehend the remaining suspects and ensure justice for the victim.
