A former Boko Haram member from Bama Local Government Area of Borno State has appealed to Nigerians to forgive and accept ex-insurgents who have renounced violence and are seeking to rebuild their lives.
In a video that has gained attention online, the former fighter claimed that many residents of Bama were forced into the terrorist group’s ranks after the town was captured by insurgents during the height of the conflict. He maintained that joining the group was not a voluntary decision for many people who remained in the area.
According to him, those who stayed behind after the town fell under Boko Haram control had little choice but to comply with the group’s demands and authority.
The ex-fighter expressed regret over his involvement with the insurgents and urged Nigerians to show understanding toward those who have abandoned terrorism. He insisted that he and others who have surrendered are committed to living peacefully and lawfully.
He also assured the public that he would never return to violent activities, saying his experiences during the insurgency convinced him to reject terrorism permanently.
The former insurgent further pledged to cooperate with security agencies and government authorities in efforts to promote peace, stability and development across the country.
His appeal has reignited public debate over the Federal Government’s deradicalisation and reintegration initiatives for former Boko Haram members. While some citizens support giving rehabilitated individuals a second chance, others remain concerned about the safety and implications of reintegrating former fighters into local communities.
