The presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), Peter Obi, has urged President Bola Tinubu to step down, citing what he described as the administration’s inability to effectively tackle Nigeria’s economic and security challenges.
Drivetvnews gathered that Obi made the statement on Monday while reacting to the resignation of British Prime Minister Keir Starmer, describing the development as an example of accountability in leadership.
According to Obi, public officials should be willing to take responsibility when they fail to meet expectations. He recalled that before the 2015 general elections, Tinubu had repeatedly called on former President Goodluck Jonathan to resign over issues such as insecurity and economic difficulties, including the abduction of the Chibok schoolgirls.
The former Anambra State governor also referenced promises made by Tinubu during the 2023 presidential campaign, including commitments to improve electricity supply, strengthen anti-corruption efforts, enhance infrastructure, and improve citizens’ welfare. Obi argued that many of those promises remain unfulfilled.
He claimed that Nigeria has continued to face worsening insecurity, frequent kidnappings, persistent power shortages, and growing economic hardship since Tinubu assumed office. Obi also alleged that key sectors such as transportation, infrastructure, and governance have experienced setbacks.
Based on these concerns, Obi said he was joining other Nigerians in calling for the President’s resignation, insisting that such a step would reinforce accountability and responsibility in public office.
He added that promoting a culture where leaders are held accountable for their performance would strengthen democracy and contribute to a better future for the country.
