The National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) has announced the discontinuation of posting corps members to states considered unsafe due to the escalating security challenges in the country. The revelation came from the Minister of Youth, Jamila Ibrahim, during an interview on Channels Television’s Sunday Politics. In response to concerns about the safety of corps members, Ibrahim highlighted the immediate measures taken to prioritize their security, emphasizing that postings are now exclusively directed to states deemed safe. Acknowledging the multi-faceted nature of security matters, she stressed the collaborative efforts with various government agencies. The minister explained, “When it comes to security matters, it is a multi-sectoral approach. So, it is not the NYSC alone and the ministry that is involved. We are working with security outlets to ensure corps members are safe.”In addition to adjusting posting practices, the NYSC is implementing group transportation strategies to enhance the safety of corps members during their journeys to and from camps.Ibrahim also mentioned ongoing efforts by the Federal Government to reform the NYSC scheme, particularly in the context of remuneration. The envisioned reforms aim to transform the NYSC into a revenue-generating agency and better prepare corps members for the job market. She stated, “The reforms will actually transform the NYSC into a revenue-generating agency and prepare corps members for the job market.” These changes reflect a broader initiative to adapt the NYSC scheme to the current realities of the nation.
