Olawale Adekoya, the saxophonist for Fuji legend Wasiu Ayinde Marshal (K1 De Ultimate), has apologised over the controversial “unnecessary pregnancy” chant that went viral during one of the singer’s performances, insisting that K1 had no role in creating or promoting the phrase.
In a video shared on his TikTok page on Sunday, Adekoya accepted full responsibility for interpreting the traditional alujo drum rhythm in a way that sparked widespread criticism on social media.
The controversy followed a recent viral performance in which K1 sang about “unnecessary pregnancy,” shortly after a woman, Ogechi Eleana, publicly alleged that the Fuji star fathered and abandoned her 12-year-old daughter. Although many linked the performance to the allegations, K1 never directly stated that the song was aimed at the woman or her child.
Taking responsibility for the incident, Adekoya explained that he was the band member who gave meaning to the rhythm during the performance.
He revealed that the drum pattern had existed in the band’s performances for years after being introduced by percussionist Ayokunle Ayolowo, but originally carried no specific meaning.
According to him, members of the band later began jokingly attaching different humorous interpretations to the rhythm during backstage conversations, long before the current controversy emerged.
Adekoya stressed that K1 neither created the phrase nor instructed anyone to use it.
He said the singer was unaware of the interpretation until it was performed on stage, adding that K1 was surprised the band had eventually attached lyrics to one of his favourite rhythms.
The saxophonist also rejected claims that the band deliberately mocked Ogechi Eleana or her daughter during the performance.
He explained that the members were simply enjoying themselves on stage and that the chant was never intended as a reference to anyone involved in the ongoing paternity allegations.
Offering an apology on behalf of the band’s percussionists and other members, Adekoya admitted that the performance happened at an unfortunate time and acknowledged the public backlash.
He appealed to those offended by the incident to forgive the band, saying the interpretation was harmless but poorly timed.
Adekoya further clarified that he released the apology voluntarily and was not pressured by K1 or anyone else to make the statement, adding that the band accepts responsibility for the misunderstanding.
