Inspector-General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu and the President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Oyinkansola Badejo-Okusanya, SAN, have agreed to strengthen cooperation between the police and legal profession to reduce recurring disputes between lawyers and police officers.
The Force Public Relations Officer, CSP Ani Iniedu, disclosed this in a statement on Tuesday following the NBA president’s visit to the Force Headquarters in Abuja.
During the meeting, Badejo-Okusanya called for stronger communication between both institutions, including specialised training for lawyers and improved engagement between police lawyers and members of the wider legal profession.
She noted that lawyers and police officers perform complementary roles within the justice system and urged both professions to avoid confrontations capable of damaging public confidence in the administration of justice.
The NBA president also highlighted a UNICEF-supported initiative focused on improving children’s access to justice. She proposed that police stations should have access to police lawyers who can provide legal assistance to children who come into contact with the juvenile justice system.
In his response, Disu described the police and legal profession as partners in the pursuit of justice, noting that while lawyers safeguard citizens’ rights and police officers protect lives and property, both roles ultimately serve the justice system.
The IGP called for greater professionalism whenever lawyers and police officers interact, particularly regarding the recording and publication of such encounters on social media.
Disu also identified delays in criminal trials as an area requiring joint action. He proposed establishing a dedicated communication channel between the Nigeria Police Force and the NBA to address professional concerns and settle disagreements before they escalate.
While acknowledging that disputes could occur between the two professions, the IGP stressed that such differences should be handled with civility, professionalism and mutual respect.
He assured the NBA leadership of his commitment to building a stronger partnership aimed at improving access to justice, protecting fundamental rights and strengthening Nigeria’s criminal justice system.
