The Speaker of the Osun State House of Assembly, Adewale Egbedun, has directed the Ministry of Environment to urgently remove heaps of refuse from major roads across the state.
Egbedun also ordered the ministry to clear blocked drainages and waterways, calling for a coordinated and sustained approach to environmental sanitation.
The directive followed a meeting between members of the Assembly and the Commissioner for Environment, Mayowa Adejoorin, alongside senior officials of the ministry, as part of the lawmakers’ oversight activities.
The Speaker stressed the need for immediate action to address accumulated waste and neglected drainage channels, noting that effective drainage systems are crucial to reducing flooding risks and protecting lives and property.
He further directed relevant agencies to ensure proper evacuation and disposal of refuse, particularly in major towns and cities, markets, residential communities and public spaces.
Egbedun said waste management should not be limited to occasional clean-up exercises but should become a continuous and properly coordinated responsibility.
He also called for regular cleaning of major streets and public areas requiring government attention, assuring that the Assembly would continue monitoring government agencies to ensure they respond effectively to environmental concerns.
Responding, Adejoorin and heads of relevant agencies briefed the lawmakers on the ministry’s activities, challenges and ongoing efforts to improve environmental sanitation across Osun State.
