The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) has arrested Basil Iwoba Ochili, Managing Director of Debasilio Construction and Estate Development Limited, over an alleged ₦128 million land fraud in Anambra State.
Drivetvnews gathered that the EFCC Enugu Zonal Directorate said Ochili was arrested following a petition alleging that he falsely presented himself as the owner of five plots of land located beside Stamford Hotel, near the Anambra State Secretariat at Aroma Junction, Awka.
According to the commission, the petitioner paid ₦128 million into Ochili’s company account after relying on the ownership claim but was subsequently unable to gain possession of the property.
The EFCC said preliminary investigations indicated that Ochili allegedly knew the land formed part of the Anambra State Government Secretariat property but proceeded to offer it for sale.
The commission further alleged that rather than refund the money, the suspect issued two dud cheques to the petitioner.
The agency also claimed that Ochili used part of the funds to settle existing debts and that his company had not been compliant with its tax obligations.
The EFCC said investigations are ongoing and that the suspect would be charged to court upon their conclusion.
