An officer of the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS) has been killed by unidentified gunmen during a routine surveillance patrol in Niger State, while another officer sustained serious injuries.
The attack occurred along the Tunga Taya–Woro axis on Tuesday, October 6, 2026, at approximately 11:30 a.m., according to a statement issued on Thursday by the service’s Public Relations Officer, Deputy Comptroller of Immigration Akinsola Akinlabi.
Akinlabi said the two officers attached to the Wawa Control Post were carrying out surveillance duties in the area when they came under attack.
The deceased officer was identified as Assistant Superintendent of Immigration I (ASI I) I.U. Babangida, while his colleague, Inspector A.K. Musa, sustained serious injuries but managed to escape from the scene.
According to the NIS, Musa is currently receiving medical treatment.
The statement described the incident as a tragic loss, noting that one officer died while the other was seriously injured.
The service disclosed that Babangida had been buried in accordance with Islamic rites, adding that it honoured his sacrifice and dedication to duty.
The NIS also extended its condolences to the deceased officer’s family, colleagues and loved ones while wishing the injured officer a speedy recovery.
It assured both families of continued support and assistance following the incident.
Regarding efforts to apprehend those responsible, the service said it was working with the Niger State Government and relevant security agencies to identify the attackers and bring them to justice.
Despite the incident, the NIS reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Nigeria’s borders, insisting that the attack would not deter it from carrying out its responsibilities.
