One person has been confirmed dead following an attack by suspected political thugs on supporters welcoming Accord Party governorship candidate, Alhaji Oriyomi Hamzat, back to Ibadan, Oyo State.
Drivetvnews gathered that the incident occurred shortly after the supporters left Molete and proceeded towards Iwo Road, where the Agidigbo FM office is located.
The Oyo State Police Command said the incident was reported at a police station on Wednesday, October 14, 2026, by Kehinde Samuel Ibikunle. According to the police, the group was attacked by suspected hoodlums during the procession.
One of the victims, 40-year-old Azeez Tajudeen, from Oke Amu in Otesiwaju Local Government Area of Oyo State, sustained a severe injury to his right eye.
He was rushed for medical attention and later taken to the State Hospital, Ring Road, Ibadan, where medical personnel examined him and confirmed his death. His remains were subsequently deposited at the hospital morgue.
Following the incident, the state Commissioner of Police, Abimbola Ayodeji Olugbenga, ordered the transfer of the case to the Command Monitoring Unit for a thorough and discreet investigation.
The police said the investigation would establish the circumstances surrounding the attack and ensure that anyone found responsible was brought to justice.
The command also advised political aspirants, party leaders and event organisers to notify the police at least 48 hours before holding processions or public gatherings. It said advance notification would help officers provide adequate security, maintain public order and protect participants and other residents.
The police further urged anyone with credible information about the incident to cooperate with investigators.
Earlier reports indicated that several people were injured during a clash involving supporters of the Allied Peoples Movement (APM) and the Accord Party in the Molete area of Ibadan.
Accord Party spokesperson Samuel Ibikunle alleged that the party’s procession came under attack after reaching Molete, claiming that hoodlums threw stones and bottles at supporters. He also alleged that a woman sustained injuries and was taken to hospital.
Ibikunle rejected reports that supporters of the two parties exchanged gunfire. He instead alleged that the attackers were led by an individual known as “Star Boy.”
He further suggested that the group might be affiliated with either the All Progressives Congress (APC) or the APM but did not establish which party, if any, it belonged to. These allegations have not been independently established.
Security personnel attached to Operation Burst were reportedly deployed to the area to prevent further violence.
The incident comes amid growing political competition in Oyo State ahead of the 2027 general elections, as political parties intensify grassroots mobilisation.
The APM has adopted Bimbo Adekanmbi as its consensus governorship candidate for the 2027 election, while political realignments continue among supporters of various parties in the state.
The clash has renewed concerns about the risk of political violence as election-related activities gather momentum across Oyo State.
