A 21-year-old 300-level student of Imo State University, IMSU, named Francis Marvellous, has been apprehended by operatives of the Imo State Police Command for allegedly stabbing 22-year-old Chinagorom Marvellous Kingsley, a final year student of the Federal University of Technology Owerri, FUTO, to death.

Commissioner of Police, CP Aboki Danjuma, disclosed during a press briefing at the police headquarters in Owerri on Friday that the arrest followed a prompt response to a distress call from the Chief Security Officer of FUTO, retired DSP Patrick Egwu. Police patrol operatives swiftly apprehended the suspect, preventing him from being lynched by an angry mob at the scene.

According to CP Danjuma, the victim’s body was recovered and taken to the Federal Medical Center, Owerri, where he was pronounced dead and subsequently deposited at the mortuary. Upon interrogation, the suspect confessed to the crime, revealing that a heated argument with members of the University’s Man O’ War Unit led to the fatal stabbing on the night of March 29, 2024.

The suspect mentioned three accomplices—his brother Francis Promise, Prince, and an individual known as Soji—who were allegedly present during the altercation. Efforts are underway to apprehend the suspects at large and determine their involvement in the incident. The investigation, led by the State Criminal Investigation Department (SCID), will culminate in the arraignment of the suspects in court.

The Commissioner of Police emphasized that contrary to misinformation circulating on social media, the stabbing was not motivated by tribal differences. He warned against spreading false narratives aimed at inciting intertribal conflict and assured the public that the perpetrators, as well as those disseminating fake news, will face legal consequences.

CP Danjuma directed the Deputy Commissioner of Police overseeing the State Criminal Investigation Department to oversee the case diligently and ensure that all suspects involved, along with purveyors of fake news, are apprehended and prosecuted accordingly.
