In an operation aimed at rescuing three missing officers in Ohoror community, Ughelli North Local Government Area of Delta State, corpses of some of the killed police officers, drafted from IRT Abuja, PMF 51 Oghara, and the Anti-Kidnapping Squad, Asaba, have been retrieved by a joint team of security agents and local vigilantes.
Following a distress call on January 24, 2024, by Moses Progress, who alleged being robbed by suspected herdsmen while performing a ritual under a bridge close to the nipping point in Ohoror community, three police officers, all inspectors, responded but never returned.
Confirming the alleged killing of the six officers and 15 others missing, a police inspector, who escaped from the herdsmen’s captivity days later, disclosed the grim reality.
Although Delta State police authorities have remained silent on the matter, corpses of some of the slain officers were discovered between Sunday and Monday by a combined team of local vigilantes in the forest. Reportedly, operational huts of suspected killer Fulani herdsmen were destroyed, with six corpses recovered from the Agadama bush, while others remain missing.
A senior security source at the Delta State Police Command revealed that the recovered corpses were deposited at the Mariere Central Hospital morgue in Ughelli, where officials of the Delta State government were present during documentation, though their representative status was unconfirmed.
Further details are yet to emerge, but efforts are underway to gather more information as the investigation progresses.
