An individual identified only as Onuora, believed to be in his middle age, is currently held by police authorities at the Inland Town Police Division in Onitsha, following accusations of raping a schoolgirl in the Onitsha area of Anambra State.
Reports indicate that the suspect was apprehended near Ado Girls Secondary School in Onitsha by law enforcement agents who had been monitoring his activities.
According to a police insider, the suspect had developed a pattern of lurking around the school premises, targeting potential victims.
In response to the arrest, Anambra State Governor, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has urged for the suspect’s detention.
In a statement released by the state Commissioner for Education, Prof. Ngozi Chumthe a-Udeh, Governor Soludo specifically requested the remand of the alleged rapist at the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka, pending further investigation into the matter.
“The suspect is currently in custody at the Inland Town Police Division in Onitsha,” Prof. Chumthe a-Udeh stated.
Expressing disdain for such heinous acts, Governor Soludo pledged to pursue all legal avenues to ensure the perpetrator faces justice, with the hope of deterring similar offenses in the future.
The commissioner urged the people of Anambra to speak out against such reprehensible behavior.
Efforts to obtain additional information from the state police spokesperson, DSP Tochukwu Ikenga, were unsuccessful as calls and messages to his phone went unanswered.
It is worth noting that the Anambra State Police command recently arrested and detained 11 suspects in connection with various cases of rape and defilement.
DSP Ikenga previously disclosed in a statement that the suspects were apprehended in different parts of the state, with the Commissioner of Police, Aderemi Adeoye, directing prompt arraignment of all indicted suspects once investigations are concluded.
