Edo State Governor, Godwin Obaseki, has administered the oath of office to Omobayo Marvellous Godwins, appointing him as the state’s new deputy governor.
Reported by Drivetvnews, Omobayo steps into the role following the impeachment of Philip Shaibu by the State House of Assembly earlier on Monday.
Shaibu’s impeachment came after the House of Assembly endorsed the findings of the Justice S. A. Omonua (rtd)-led impeachment panel, which was tasked by the Chief Judge of Edo State to investigate allegations of misconduct and perjury against Shaibu.
Eighteen out of the 20 lawmakers present during the plenary session on April 8, 2024, voted in favor of the impeachment, with one member dissenting.
The panel’s report concluded that the former deputy governor was culpable of leaking government secrets but cleared him of perjury charges.
In response to the impeachment, Governor Obaseki promptly swore-in Omobayo as Shaibu’s replacement.
Omobayo, who hails from Akoko-Edo Local Government Area within the Edo North Senatorial District like his predecessor, is described as a seasoned engineer with significant experience in the oil and gas sector.
Born on July 19, 1986, Omobayo holds a Bachelor of Engineering Degree in Electrical and Electronics Engineering and an MSc in Public Administration from the University of Benin, UNIBEN. He is a registered member of both the Nigerian Society of Engineers, NSE, and the Council for the Regulation of Engineering in Nigeria, COREN.
Having worked as a Senior Maintenance Engineer at Dresser Wayne West Africa Limited, Omobayo is well-versed in operations in the South South region.
Additionally, he is actively engaged in politics within his local community.
