A 300-level student from the Department of International Relations at Ajayi Crowther University in Oyo State was reportedly raped by two university sheriffs in a classroom, according to recent reports.
The incident allegedly occurred around 7 pm on a Thursday when the student was in class with her boyfriend. The university sheriffs entered the classroom and demanded N5,000 from them. However, they only had N1,500. Subsequently, the sheriffs sent the boyfriend away and proceeded to rape the student.
A close friend and hostel mate of the victim, speaking anonymously, revealed that upon returning to the hostel, the victim was in distress and shared the ordeal with them. She recounted how the sheriffs demanded money, sent her boyfriend away, and raped her. The victim expressed feeling blamed and traumatized during a visit to the medical center, where she alleged being stigmatized and harassed.
The university management has responded by initiating an investigation into the matter. In an official statement released on their X page (formerly Twitter) and signed by the Public Relations Officer, Mr. Olufemi John Atoyebi, the university confirmed the incident and assured stakeholders that appropriate action would be taken. The suspects have been handed over to the state police, and an internal panel of inquiry has been set up to investigate further. The university emphasized its commitment to maintaining its reputation and fostering a safe environment for its students.
Efforts to contact the Public Relations Officer of the Oyo State Police Command for comment were unsuccessful at the time of reporting.
