The Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC) and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have temporarily suspended their industrial action, following a significant breakthrough in negotiations with the Federal Government. The decision was announced by TUC President Festus Osifo in Abuja on Tuesday, after an emergency meeting of the unions’ national executive council.

The strike, which commenced on Monday, had brought the nation to a grinding halt, with widespread closures of schools, businesses, hospitals, and airports, and a nationwide blackout. The labour unions were protesting the recent electricity tariff hike and the government’s failure to agree on a new minimum wage.

After months of protracted negotiations, the government had offered ₦60,000, which was rejected by the unions. However, in a bid to resolve the impasse, the government agreed to pay a higher minimum wage, exceeding ₦60,000, and to regular meetings with the unions. The parties also agreed to ensure no worker would be victimized for participating in the industrial action.

The temporary suspension of the strike offers a glimmer of hope, and the outcome of the next meeting between the unions and the government will determine the next course of action. A detailed communique outlining the agreement’s terms is expected soon.
