Four individuals tragically lost their lives at the well known Jattu Market in the Etsako West Local Government Area of Edo State due to falling trees during heavy morning rains on Monday. The incident also resulted in numerous injuries, causing profound grief and tension among eyewitnesses and locals.
Mr. Marvellous Zibiri, the Chairman of the Council, confirmed the distressing event to journalists, recounting the sequence of events: “Around 8:00 am and 9:00 am, I received a call from my Vice Chairman and the Supervisory Council for Environment regarding the tragic incident at Jattu Market.”
He further explained, “Several trees surrounding the market fell simultaneously during the rainfall, leading to the deaths of four individuals and injuring many others.”
Zibiri continued, stating, “We have already recovered the bodies of the deceased and transferred them to the mortuary. Those injured have been promptly taken to hospitals for necessary medical attention.”
The ongoing rescue efforts involve the careful removal of fallen trees to ensure no additional casualties are overlooked. Zibiri expressed deep condolences to the bereaved families and urged residents of the area to prioritize safety by staying indoors during inclement weather conditions.
