Nigerian singer and songwriter Spyro disclosed that his father, a pastor, stopped paying his school fees due to his poor academic performance, which led to a strained relationship between them.

In an interview with Chude Jideonwo, Spyro explained that his mother took over the responsibility of funding his education. This situation made him feel as though his father harbored negative feelings towards him, affecting their bond.

Spyro shared, “When I was younger, my academic struggles led my dad to stop covering my school fees. My mum then took on the task of sending me to secondary school and university. I saw her face significant challenges in managing this, and it was not easy for her.

“My dad’s approach was to enforce discipline. He said, ‘If you’re not coming home with good grades, I’m going to stop paying for your schooling and will not continue investing in your education.’

“While I don’t blame him now, this decision did impact our relationship. Growing up, I felt as though my dad disliked me. There were times when I even questioned my mum about whether he was truly my father. His strictness seemed to stem from his role as a pastor and the typical expectations that come with it.”
