Enugu State renames Road After ‘Gwo Gwo Gwo Ngwo’ Singer, Highlife Legend Mike Ejeagha

Enugu State Governor, Peter Mbah, has renamed the newly reconstructed Obinagu Road in honor of the esteemed highlife musician, ‘Gentleman’ Mike Ejeagha. This renaming reflects the state government’s efforts to acknowledge Ejeagha’s substantial contributions to Enugu’s cultural heritage.

 

Governor Mbah announced the new name during the commissioning of four roads in the Abakpa Nike area, including the newly designated Mike Ejeagha Crescent. He underscored the importance of celebrating the achievements of the 93-year-old musician while he is still alive.

 

“To honor Mike Ejeagha’s significant impact on the cultural heritage of Enugu State, we have renamed Obinagu Road, which leads to his residence and was recently reconstructed, to Mike Ejeagha Road,” Mbah stated.

 

Following the announcement, Governor Mbah visited Ejeagha at his home to express the state government’s gratitude for his lifelong contributions. He promised continued support for the musician, reflecting the government’s broader commitment to preserving and promoting the state’s cultural legacy.

 

Governor Mbah also used the occasion to reaffirm his administration’s commitment to infrastructural development across Enugu State. He revealed that contracts for the construction of 141 roads, including 20 rural roads, have been awarded, with Abakpa among the areas set to benefit.

 

“We will soon begin the dualization of Penocks Junction on the Enugu-Onitsha Road, extending to Opi-Nsukka. The contract has been awarded, and work will commence shortly. Our dedication to transforming Enugu State remains steadfast, with numerous projects underway to enhance the lives of our people,” Mbah announced.

 

Mike Ejeagha’s music has recently experienced a resurgence in popularity, particularly his 1983 hit “Ka Esi Le Onye Isi Oche,” which gained renewed attention through a dance challenge initiated by comedian Brain Jotter (Chukwuebuka Emmanuel Amuzie). This challenge has introduced Ejeagha’s folklore-style music to a new audience, highlighting his enduring influence in the highlife music genre.
