The Lagos State Government has revealed plans to prohibit the use of single-use plastics, including sachet water, starting from January 2025. This was confirmed by Tokunbo Wahab, the Commissioner for Environment and Water Resources, during a stakeholders’ workshop focused on raising awareness about the ban on Styrofoam and single-use plastics (SUPs) in packaging across Lagos.

Wahab explained that the upcoming ban is part of the government’s broader efforts to establish clear policies on plastic usage, aimed at promoting sustainable plastic waste management while ensuring a healthier and safer environment.

According to Drivetvnews, Lagos State had already prohibited the use of Styrofoam in government establishments and the wider metropolis as of January 2024, following concerns over the growing problem of plastic pollution and its harmful environmental impact.

Industry stakeholders, however, have urged the state government to consider a gradual implementation of the ban rather than a sudden, blanket enforcement. They argue that phased enforcement would promote better compliance and provide some relief in light of the current economic difficulties.

Mosaku Ololade, chairperson of the Lagos chapter of the Association for Table Water Producers of Nigeria (ATWAP), echoed these concerns, stating that the association has been in discussions with the government and has been working to educate its members on the planned changes.

“We want the government to keep engaging with us. As a responsible association, we are prepared to collaborate,” Ololade said. “With over 2,000 members in Lagos and more than 10,000 workers, we urge the government to implement the ban in stages, allowing our members sufficient time to comply.”
