Ariyo Monday, a student from Obafemi Grammar School in Imeko Afon Local Government Area, Ogun State, reportedly died following a disciplinary action by a teacher. According to reports, the teacher allegedly subjected Ariyo to 162 frog jumps and flogged him.

In a video shared by activist JustAdetoun, the incident began when a teacher brought a trash can into the classroom and instructed students to handle it with care. Ariyo made a remark that the trash can had been purchased with students’ money, which reportedly angered the teacher. Following this, the teacher consulted with the principal, who allegedly approved the punishment.

JustAdetoun claimed that the student was given 164 strokes of the cane, leading him to collapse. Drivetvnews reported that the video showed Ariyo lying in a hospital bed, on a drip, struggling and in visible pain.

Police spokesperson Omolola Odutola confirmed the incident but clarified that the punishment consisted of 24 strokes of the cane along with 162 frog jumps. She mentioned that the student was taken to the Federal Medical Centre in Abeokuta, where he later died. His body has been moved to Ayetoro mortuary for an autopsy.

Odutola said, “The incident occurred on October 15, 2024. The student was ordered to do 162 frog jumps and received 24 strokes of the cane. He was rushed to FMC Idi-Aba for treatment, but he passed away today [Friday].”

The investigation into the cause of Ariyo’s death is ongoing as authorities work to uncover the full circumstances surrounding this incident.
