The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Police Command announced on Monday the arrest of a legislator for allegedly assaulting a driver in Abuja.
Josephine Adeh, spokesperson for the Abuja Command, confirmed that Alex Mascot Ikwechegh was taken into custody and is currently being questioned at Maitama Police Station.
According to the police report, the incident was reported by the driver, Stephen Abuwatseya. Preliminary findings indicate that a disagreement occurred while Mr. Abuwatseya was delivering a package to Hon. Ikwechegh, which escalated into a physical assault.
The FCT Police Command voiced concerns about Hon. Ikwechegh’s apparent disregard for the authority of the Inspector General of Police. After allegedly slapping the driver, Ikwechegh reportedly stated, “You can go ahead and call the Inspector General of Police,” reflecting a dismissive attitude toward law enforcement.
Ikwechegh remains at the Maitama Police Station for questioning. FCT Police Commissioner Olatunji Disu has ordered a thorough investigation into the incident.
The Command reassured the public that it is committed to an impartial investigation and that appropriate legal action will follow based on the findings.
