A Kano State resident, Nasiru Mukhtar, has been placed in custody by the State Shariah Court at Kofar Kudu after allegedly attacking Imam Malam Murtala Sulaiman during morning prayers at a mosque in the Tudunwada area. According to Drivetvnews reports, the incident occurred around 5 am on October 22, 2024.
Mukhtar is accused of entering the mosque, grabbing the Imam by the neck, repeatedly slapping him, tearing his clothes, and seizing his microphone. After the incident, the Imam reported the matter to the state police, resulting in Mukhtar’s arrest.
During the court hearing, Mukhtar’s lawyer requested bail, emphasizing the need for further investigation. However, the presiding judge, Malam Isah Rabi’u Gaya, directed that Mukhtar undergo a psychiatric evaluation to determine his mental state.
The court has set the next hearing for November 22, 2024, and Mukhtar remains in detention pending further proceedings.
Igbo Muslim Appointed Imam of Abuja National Mosque
In another development, Professor Iliyasu Usman, an Igbo man, has been appointed as the Imam of the Abuja National Mosque. Usman led his first sermon today during Jumm’at prayers, marking a significant milestone for Nigeria’s Muslim community.
This new appointment has been celebrated, particularly by the South East Muslim Organisation of Nigeria (SEMON). The group views it as a recognition of Usman’s commitment to Islamic knowledge and leadership.
In a statement, SEMON praised the inclusive approach of the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA), under the leadership of the President-General and Sultan of Sokoto, Alhaji Muhammad Sa’ad Abubakar. SEMON emphasized that the appointment not only honors Usman’s personal achievements but also entrusts him with the responsibility of leading the community in worship and service to Allah.
The organization expressed confidence that Usman’s leadership would enhance the Igbo Muslim community and foster greater unity within Nigeria’s broader Muslim population.
