The Presidency announced that the Nigeria Police would be submitting case files on Saturday for minors who were charged with treason for participating in the August hunger protest. The case files will be handed over to the Attorney General of the Federation, Lateef Fagbemi. This information was shared by Sunday Dare, Special Adviser on Public Communication and Orientation to President Bola Tinubu, on Saturday morning.

Dare, who previously served as the Minister of Youth and Sports under former President Muhammadu Buhari, said that Fagbemi would start reviewing the case files, following President Tinubu’s instructions from Friday.

Dare stated, “The Attorney General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Prince Lateef Fagbemi, will begin reviewing the case files of the 76 individuals facing charges of arson, terrorism, and treasonable felony today, in line with President Tinubu’s directive.”

He added that the police would transfer the case files to the Attorney General’s office and hand them over to the Director of Public Prosecution of the Federation (DPPF) at approximately 11 a.m. on Saturday, November 2, 2024.

According to Drivetvnews, the 76 minors, charged with terrorism, treason, and arson, were given bail conditions of ₦10 million each, among other requirements.

The trial has been criticized by opposition leaders, including Atiku Abubakar, Peter Obi, and Rabiu Kwankwaso. International human rights organizations, such as Amnesty International, and activists like Oby Ezekwesili have also called on the government to dismiss the charges against the minors.
