A 63-year-old man, identified as Akin Kuboye, was hospitalized after becoming trapped in a 120-meter-deep well in the Igando area of Lagos State on Sunday.

The Director of the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service (LSFRS), Margaret Adeseye, confirmed the incident in a statement, explaining that Kuboye became trapped while performing repair work inside the well, causing alarm among residents in the area.

Adeseye reported that LSFRS operatives quickly responded to the distress call and successfully rescued the victim.

She stated, “The Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service responded to a life-threatening emergency at 09:54 a.m. on Sunday at 20, Muyibi Adebayo Street, off Agric Road, Egan, Igando.

“Upon arriving at the scene, it was discovered that a 63-year-old man, Akin Kuboye, had become trapped while working in a 120-meter-deep well located behind a 14-room bungalow on a property measuring about 648 square meters.”

Adeseye praised the efforts of the Ejigbo Rescue Crew, who managed to pull Kuboye out of the well alive. The rescue team handed him over to the Lagos State Ambulance Service (LASAMBUS), which provided initial treatment to stabilize him from the effects of inhaled ammonia gas before transferring him to a hospital for further care.

In addition, Olufemi Oke-Osanyintolu, the Permanent Secretary of the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA), also addressed the incident. He confirmed in a separate statement that Kuboye sustained minor injuries during the ordeal.

Oke-Osanyintolu explained, “The LASEMA Dolphin Response Team arrived at the scene to find that the victim, a plumber, had fallen into the well while conducting repair work. Investigations revealed that he had slipped while working on one of the pipes inside the well.”
