A woman identified as Balikis Shobowale has been handed over to the police after she was allegedly caught attempting to smuggle ethanol into the Ibara Custodial Centre in Ogun State.
The Nigerian Correctional Service, Ogun State Command, said Shobowale was intercepted by correctional officers around 3:50 p.m. on Saturday during routine screening at the facility.
The command’s Public Relations Officer, Olayinka Odukoya, said the woman allegedly concealed the ethanol inside a bottled water pack and presented it as drinking water meant for an inmate.
According to the command, correctional officers detected the substance before it could reach the inmates.
Shobowale was subsequently handed over to the police for further investigation and possible prosecution.
The Controller of Corrections in Ogun State, Abioye Kamoru Adesina, reaffirmed the service’s zero-tolerance policy towards the smuggling of prohibited items into custodial facilities.
Adesina said the incident demonstrated the command’s commitment to maintaining order, protecting inmates and preventing contraband from entering correctional centres.
The command also assured the public that it would continue to strengthen screening and security measures at its facilities.
The latest incident comes weeks after another woman, Iyabo Sowunmi, was reportedly arrested at the same facility for allegedly attempting to smuggle a suspected psychoactive substance to her son, Dare Sowunmi.
