A fire outbreak has damaged the Nigeria Customs Service Western Marine Command office in Apapa, Lagos, destroying property estimated to be worth millions of naira.
Drivetvnews gathered that the incident occurred at about 10:23 a.m. on Monday and was reportedly triggered by an electrical surge in the conference room before spreading to other parts of the building.
According to the News Agency of Nigeria, officers on duty made efforts to control the fire before personnel from the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service arrived at about 10:45 a.m.
The newly posted Deputy Comptroller of Customs, Timothy Jonah, described the incident as unfortunate, noting that he had just resumed duty to take over the command when the fire broke out.
Jonah said the command would establish a committee to investigate the cause of the incident and identify measures to prevent a recurrence.
He commended the Customs personnel for their prompt response and their cooperation with the fire service.
The Deputy Comptroller added that the command would strengthen its safety measures following the incident.
