In a recent interview with Premium Times, 26-year-old Nollywood actor and digital content creator, Iremide Adeoye, shared how playing a gay role in the industry significantly boosted his career. He expressed his surprise at the overwhelming reception of his character, Lolu Adeleke, stating that audiences resonated more with the role than he had expected.
“When the audience can relate with the character, that’s great news for me. People have come to resonate more with the character, way more than I expected, and that is the joy for me as an actor when the audience can relate with the surface; that’s great news for me,” Iremide explained.
Despite potential backlash for portraying a queer character in a country with homophobic sentiments, he emphasized that the positive response and love from viewers have outweighed the negativity. He chooses to focus on the appreciation of his work rather than the negativity that might arise from his role.
