A 20-year-old man, Obioma Joseph Nwadinma, tragically lost his life while attempting to steal cables from a 500kVA distribution transformer in Abayi-Ogbuligba Junction, Osisioma Local Government Area, Abia State.

The incident, which occurred recently, was confirmed in a statement by Edise Ekong, the Communication Manager of Aba Power. Ekong explained that community members and local leaders became suspicious of Nwadinma’s movements and promptly alerted the police and security personnel from Aba Power. While trying to flee, Nwadinma was electrocuted, leading to his death.

“It is unfortunate that this young man, a member of a nearby community, met his end in such a shameful way, bringing dishonor to his family, community, and peers,” Ekong said.

Community Vigilance Commended

Ekong praised the community for their efforts in protecting critical electricity infrastructure, stating that their vigilance helped prevent further vandalism in Osisioma and Aba North local government areas.

In another incident, Isaac Ude was caught tampering with prepaid electricity meters in Aba North LGA. He was apprehended by the police in collaboration with Aba Power’s security team.

“These incidents show that communities, businesses, and individuals in our service areas are beginning to take ownership of electricity infrastructure. They now see these assets as their own and are working to safeguard them for the collective good,” Ekong explained.

Changing Attitudes Toward Infrastructure

Ekong noted a positive shift in public behavior, as more people are now taking an active role in preventing vandalism of critical infrastructure, including power facilities, telecommunications cables, and rail tracks.

He expressed optimism about future developments, explaining that once natural gas supply to Aba Power’s 188-megawatt General Electric plant resumes, electricity supply will improve significantly. This improvement is expected to further strengthen public cooperation in protecting power infrastructure.

Call for Continued Support

“We sincerely appreciate the support and understanding of the communities in our service areas. Their efforts are invaluable, and we do not take them for granted,” Ekong stated.

He urged residents to remain vigilant and to report any suspicious activities around electricity infrastructure to security agencies or Aba Power. The statement concluded with an appeal for continued community involvement in safeguarding the infrastructure to ensure consistent power supply for all.
