Governor Francis Nwifuru of Ebonyi State has urged residents of Nkalaha Community to remain calm and avoid retaliatory attacks following a violent invasion of Amegu-Nkalaha village by armed herdsmen, which claimed at least 16 lives.

His appeal came in a statement issued 24 hours after the attack, which occurred on Sunday morning.

Reports indicate that the death toll has risen to 16, forcing many residents to flee for safety. During a visit to the scene, it was observed that 25 houses had been burned down, along with two motorcycles and other valuable properties. Additionally, yam barns were destroyed, leaving the displaced community members facing severe hardship.

The attack reportedly took place while most residents were attending church services or working on their farms.

In response, Governor Nwifuru assured the community that his administration would thoroughly investigate the incident and ensure justice.

In a statement released by his Chief Press Secretary, Dr. Monday Uzor, the governor condemned the attack, describing it as a grave violation of human life.

“I am deeply saddened by the tragic attack on the people of Nkalaha in Ishielu Local Government Area, which resulted in the loss of innocent lives,” he stated. “This act of violence is alarming and unacceptable. As a government committed to safeguarding lives and property, we will take decisive action to uncover the circumstances behind this attack and prevent future occurrences.”

He emphasized that while the people of Ebonyi State are known for their hospitality, their kindness should not be exploited by outsiders to inflict harm.

The governor directed security agencies to deploy forces to the area to restore order and assured affected families of his administration’s support.

“My thoughts and prayers are with you during this difficult time. Rest assured that the perpetrators will be brought to justice,” he said.

He further called on security forces to restore peace and urged residents to remain calm and refrain from any form of retaliation.
