Delta State Police Command’s spokesperson, DSP Bright Edafe, has expressed deep concern about the alarming rise in drug abuse within the state. He made this statement via his official handle on Monday, November 6, 2023, emphasizing the urgent need to address the issue and put an end to the widespread misuse of substances.

Edafe’s concern was heightened when the police recently seized a significant quantity of illicit drugs from a supplier in Ughelli. Displaying these confiscated substances, Edafe condemned the prevailing trend of drug abuse in the region. In his message, he lamented the fact that people are willingly spending substantial amounts of money to jeopardize their mental and physical health, questioning the rationale behind such self-destructive behavior.

His message was clear: society must unite to combat this problem before it spirals out of control. Edafe underscored the importance of taking immediate action to prevent the younger generation from falling victim to substance abuse, as it poses a serious threat to the future of the community. He emphasized the critical role that everyone, from law enforcement to ordinary citizens, must play in condemning and curbing this alarming trend.

In a separate incident that highlights the tragic consequences of such substance abuse and mental health issues, a woman named Lilian Nwarache, aged 39, resorted to drastic measures due to her prolonged illness. Frustrated and desperate, Nwarache consumed a lethal dose of insecticide on November 3, 2023, in the Iwaya area of Lagos.

Reports indicate that her distressing condition had driven her to seek help in a local church in Iwaya. However, her deteriorating health and despair led her to ingest the toxic substance. Although courageous passers-by prevented her from jumping into a nearby canal, Nwarache’s condition rapidly deteriorated. She was swiftly taken to a hospital, where medical professionals, unfortunately, pronounced her deceased.

Upon investigating the incident, the police discovered three passports belonging to Nwarache and her Samsung phone in her possession. This tragic event serves as a stark reminder of the importance of addressing mental health issues and providing necessary support to those in need within our communities. It underscores the urgency for society to come together, offering help and understanding to those struggling with mental health challenges and substance abuse problems.
