A fatal accident on Sunday at Uduma Junction in the Uburu community, Ohaozara Local Government Area of Ebonyi State, claimed the lives of a nine-month-old baby girl and an adult woman.

Eyewitnesses reported that a bus transporting around 25 passengers, including several children, lost control while speeding around a sharp bend and crashed into another vehicle. The impact caused the bus to flip over three times, resulting in multiple injuries.

Residents of the area quickly assisted in transporting the injured to the David Umahi Federal University Teaching Hospital (DUFUTH) in Uburu.

Sadly, the baby and the woman were pronounced dead upon arrival at the hospital.

In a statement on Monday, DUFUTH’s Public Relations Officer, Mr. Agwụ Nwogo, revealed that the victims were Ebonyi State natives who lived in Imo State. They were returning from a burial ceremony held in Okporike, Abakaliki, when the accident occurred.

The hospital activated its emergency response system to provide immediate medical attention to the victims. According to Mr. Nwogo, 23 passengers suffered varying degrees of injuries, including fractures, deep cuts, crushed limbs, and severe brain trauma.

“Eighteen patients, including the bus driver, are currently being treated in the accident and emergency unit, the surgical ward, and the intensive care unit,” he said. “Four others with less serious injuries were treated and later discharged.”

He also confirmed that an 11-month-old infant with a critical brain injury remains in intensive care and is on life support due to respiratory failure.
