The Recording Academy, organizers of the Grammy Awards, has asserted that Nigerian singer Damini Ogulu, widely known as Burna Boy, stands unrivaled as the biggest star in Afrobeats and across the entire African music scene. Burna Boy’s track ‘City Boys’ received a nomination in the inaugural Best African Music Performance category at the 66th Grammys.

Competing for the award are ‘City Boys,’ ‘Unavailable’ by Davido and Musa Keys, ‘Rush’ by Ayra Starr, ‘Amapiano’ by Asake and Olamide, and ‘Water’ by Tyla.

Burna Boy secured nominations in three additional categories: ‘Sitting On Top of the World’ featuring 21 Savage for Best Melodic Rap, ‘I Told Them’ for Best Global Music Album, and ‘Alone’ for Best Global Music Performance.

In a statement on its website, the Recording Academy congratulated Burna Boy and other nominees in the newly established Best African Music Performance category at the 2024 Grammys, praising the ‘Twice as Tall’ artist for his global collaborations and achievements.

The Academy emphasized Burna Boy’s dominance in the Afrobeats genre, citing his collaborations with global stars like Ed Sheeran and Justin Bieber, as well as his UK No. 1 album ‘I Told Them…’ featuring notable artists such as 21 Savage, J. Cole, RZA, and GZA. Burna Boy has previously received two consecutive Best Global Album Grammy nominations for ‘Twice as Tall’ and ‘African Giant.’
