An Ondo State Magistrate Court in Akure has ordered the remand of a man, John Odah, for allegedly killing his employer’s husband with a machete.

Odah was reportedly arrested by officers from the state police command following the incident, which occurred on April 18, 2025, at Agbajo Farm in Ilu-Abo, Akure North Local Government Area.

According to reports, the deceased’s wife had employed Odah to work on their farm. On the day of the incident, Odah allegedly offered the man Indian hemp, which he declined. This led to a heated dispute between them, during which Odah is accused of attacking the victim with a machete.

During the court proceedings, the prosecutor, Inspector Nelson Akintimehin, stated that the defendant struck the victim on the forehead and back with the machete, resulting in fatal injuries.

The charge sheet presented in court alleged that Odah unlawfully attacked the victim, Sunday Innocent, leading to his death. The charges are in violation of Sections 319(1) and 320(1) of the Ondo State Criminal Code Law of 2006.

Although Odah pleaded not guilty, the court did not formally record his plea. Inspector Akintimehin requested that the defendant be remanded in a correctional facility while awaiting legal advice from the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP).

Presiding over the case, Magistrate O. Omotosho approved the remand request and directed the prosecutor to duplicate the case file for review by the DPP. The matter was adjourned to May 30, 2025, for mention.
