The Alaafin of Oyo, Oba Abimbola Akeem Owoade, has responded to the controversy stirred by a viral video that showed him seated while greeting the Ooni of Ife, Oba Adeyeye Enitan Ogunwusi, during a recent public event. The encounter, which took place at a gathering hosted by Nigeria’s First Lady, Senator Oluremi Tinubu, in Ibadan, has sparked significant discussions across social media platforms.

The footage, which documented the arrival of the Ooni, showed several traditional rulers rising to greet him, while the Alaafin remained seated. This moment led to widespread speculation and public commentary regarding the dynamics between the two influential Yoruba monarchs.

In a statement issued by his Personal Assistant, Kolade Oladele, the Alaafin dismissed the rumors and clarified the situation. He criticized bloggers and online commentators for attempting to create division among Yoruba royal institutions.

Oba Owoade reiterated his profound respect for the Ooni of Ife and underscored the importance of solidarity and collaboration among traditional rulers in Yorubaland. He emphasized that their shared goals include promoting peace, unity, and development within the region.

The statement noted:
“We are aware of the unnecessary controversy being fueled by certain online platforms concerning the interaction between the Alaafin of Oyo and the Ooni of Ife at a recent public event. These narratives are distractions that divert attention from the pressing issues affecting Yorubaland.

“At a time when our people are grappling with serious socio-economic and security challenges, it is essential for all stakeholders—including leaders, youths, and citizens—to focus on efforts that will uplift our communities. Issues like public welfare, youth empowerment, safety, and cultural revitalization deserve far more attention than online sensationalism.

“His Imperial Majesty, the Alaafin of Oyo, remains committed to these priorities. He values cooperation among traditional institutions as a foundation for progress and stability. He holds the Ooni of Ife—and all traditional leaders— in the highest esteem, and remains dedicated to working alongside them to promote unity, justice, and sustainable growth in Yorubaland.

“Our ancestors understood the responsibilities that come with royal leadership: to protect, guide, and inspire with integrity. The Alaafin carries this legacy with humility and purpose, and refuses to engage in theatrics that undermine the dignity of the Yoruba monarchy.

“We urge the public to ignore divisive narratives and instead focus on building a future where our traditions fuel progress, and our royal institutions collaborate in the spirit of mutual respect and shared vision.”
