Renowned actress and filmmaker Funke Akindele has announced her willingness to reengage in political activities.

Akindele, who ran as the deputy governorship candidate in Lagos State under the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) during the 2023 general elections, teamed up with Olajide ‘Jandor’ Adediran. Their ticket, however, was defeated by the incumbent governor, Babajide Sanwo-Olu of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Speaking at the #WithChude Live event in Lagos, the star of Jenifa’s Diary shared that her decision to enter politics stemmed from a desire to give back to society.

She acknowledged feeling overwhelmed at the outset but credited prominent women leaders, especially Abike Dabiri-Erewa—chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM)—for serving as a source of inspiration and strength.

Akindele revealed that her political journey helped her develop confidence and assertiveness, empowering her to speak with conviction. Despite not winning, she emphasized that the experience was enriching and left her with no regrets.

“I felt a strong urge to contribute and support my community—that’s what led me into politics,” she explained. “Although I encountered challenges like violence and intense confrontations, I drew strength from observing female politicians who command respect, like Abike Dabiri. It made me realize that I, too, could rise to the occasion.”

She continued, “Politics taught me to be fearless and bold. I gained valuable knowledge about my state and country, and I now speak with facts and data. I’m grateful for the experience.”

When asked if she would consider returning to politics in the future, Akindele confidently responded, “Absolutely.”
