The Anambra State Police Command has reported the discovery of a burned body at a dumpsite in the Iyiowa Odekpe area on Wednesday afternoon. Officers from the Atani Divisional Headquarters made the recovery.

According to the Command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Tochukwu Ikenga, initial findings indicate that the victim may have been lynched in an act of jungle justice. The unidentified individual was allegedly involved in a gang known for stealing car batteries. He was reportedly caught by an irate crowd following an unsuccessful theft attempt. While his alleged accomplices escaped, the mob is said to have set him on fire.

Commissioner of Police, CP Ikioye Orutugu, strongly denounced the act, labeling it illegal and a serious violation of due process. He emphasized that such extrajudicial actions hinder proper justice and undermine the legal system.

The Commissioner appealed to the public to refrain from taking justice into their own hands. He encouraged residents to report criminal activities to law enforcement authorities to allow for appropriate investigation and legal action.

“This approach will enable the police to thoroughly investigate the case and possibly identify and arrest other members of the criminal gang, ensuring that justice is served through lawful means,” CP Orutugu was quoted as saying.

The Command reaffirmed its dedication to enforcing the law and safeguarding the lives and property of citizens throughout the state.
