The Lagos State Police Command has confirmed the death of a 60-year-old commercial motorcyclist, Wasiu Babatunde Adeniran, who was swept away by floodwaters during a heavy downpour along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway in the Alakuko area.

In a statement released on Thursday, May 22, 2025, the Police Public Relations Officer, Benjamin Hundeyin, disclosed that the incident occurred on the afternoon of May 20, around 4:00 p.m.

According to the statement, Adeniran lost control of his motorcycle while riding in the rain and was carried away by strong flood currents.

“The incident happened along the Lagos-Abeokuta Expressway, Alakuko, during a period of intense rainfall. The rider fell off his motorcycle, which was also swept away,” Hundeyin said.

Search operations began immediately after the incident. The motorcycle was found downstream around 6:00 p.m. on the same day, but Adeniran’s body remained missing until the next morning.

His remains were later discovered at about 9:00 a.m. on May 21 at the Obasanjo River in Ota, Ogun State.

Police officers visited both the scene of the accident and the recovery site to collect evidence as part of their ongoing investigation. Photographs of the body were taken, and the remains were transported to a public mortuary for autopsy.

The Lagos State Police Command has pledged to carry out a thorough investigation and extended its sympathies to the victim’s family.
