A fatal accident occurred on Wednesday in Aba, Abia State, when a large billboard collapsed during a heavy rainstorm, killing a tricycle passenger and injuring several others along the Aba-Owerri Road.

The incident happened near the GIA Event Centre, a busy area frequently used by tricycle operators. The sudden collapse caused widespread panic and led to a major traffic jam. Several tricycles were damaged as drivers and passengers scrambled to avoid the falling structure.

Eyewitnesses reported that the billboard appeared structurally unsound and was unable to withstand the force of the rain and wind. It collapsed onto a group of tricycles parked at their usual loading spot, crushing multiple vehicles beneath its weight.

At least seven tricycles were trapped under the debris, and concerned residents quickly rushed to help with rescue efforts. Many people sustained injuries, with some victims suffering serious harm.

One eyewitness described the heartbreaking moment when the deceased passenger, who was trying to escape, was fatally struck by a metal part of the billboard.

“It happened so fast. The billboard suddenly fell while it was raining. This is where many tricycle riders wait for passengers. One person almost escaped, but a metal piece hit them, and they died instantly,” the witness said.

In reaction to the tragedy, Professor Charles Chinekezi, Chairman of the Civil Liberties Organization (CLO) in Aba, criticized the poor standards in billboard construction across the city. He urged the Abia State government to immediately review and regulate how and where billboards are installed.

“It is unacceptable that human lives are being lost due to weak enforcement and substandard materials,” he stated. “The government must act swiftly to inspect existing billboards and ensure public safety.”

Chinekezi emphasized the urgent need for authorities to enforce safety guidelines and prevent similar incidents in the future.
