Nigerian Universities Grapple with Staff Exodus Amidst Vacancy Surge
Universities across Nigeria are experiencing a dire staff crisis, with a substantial number of teachers departing for opportunities abroad, exacerbating concerns amid a wave of retirements in these institutions.
In interviews with the media on Sunday, various chapters of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) echoed the prevailing scarcity of staff. The Usmanu Danfodiyo University in Sokoto reported approximately 100 departed teachers, while the Federal University of Gusau in Zamfara indicated a need for around 1,000 academics to fill the resulting gaps.
Similarly, the Federal University of Agriculture, Abeokuta, disclosed over 350 academic vacancies. Additionally, the University of Lagos witnessed the departure of 27 lecturers from two faculties, while the University of Uyo lost approximately 100 workers who sought opportunities abroad.
The University of Ilorin in Kwara State is grappling with over 500 academic openings, and both academic and non-academic staff from the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology are also departing the country, exacerbating the challenges faced by these institutions.
Dr. Rotimi Olorunsola, Chairman of the union at the Olusegun Agagu University of Science and Technology in Okitipupa, Ondo State, highlighted the significant exodus of both academic and non-academic personnel from the university, underscoring the scale of the departure.
