A police officer identified as Bamidele Ojo, serving under the Zone 2 Police Command, has been accused of violently assaulting a civilian, Michael Ekundayo, in the Idimu area of Lagos State.

The incident reportedly occurred on Sunday, June 22, 2025, inside a local shop. Witnesses say Officer Ojo, dressed in plain clothes but recognized by residents, entered the store and began physically assaulting a man named Segun without provocation.

As the officer continued slapping and punching Segun, another customer, Michael Ekundayo, stepped in to calm the situation. Rather than de-escalate, Ojo allegedly turned on Michael, striking him on the head with a beer bottle and stabbing him twice with the broken pieces.

Michael sustained severe injuries and was immediately rushed to a nearby hospital. Medical staff demanded an initial payment of ₦50,000 for urgent treatment out of the total estimated cost of ₦180,000, due to the seriousness of his wounds and blood loss.

Despite the gravity of the attack, sources told SaharaReporters that Officer Ojo was not taken into custody after the incident was reported at the Area M Police Command. Instead, he was allowed to walk free and was reportedly heard boasting that his influence within the police hierarchy would protect him from any repercussions.

This incident has reignited public concern over persistent police brutality and corruption. According to residents, Ojo has a history of harassing community members and is often seen threatening people with a firearm.

Eyewitnesses and the victim’s family are calling for justice, demanding that Ojo be held accountable. The case has caused significant outrage in the community, with many questioning the effectiveness of police reform efforts.

Reportedly, the attack was recorded on video, and several witnesses are prepared to testify. Sources familiar with the background of the case claim the altercation may be linked to an earlier conflict between Ojo and Segun. Ojo allegedly tried to extort Segun and filed a complaint against him at the Zone 2 Police Command. However, Segun was said to have presented documents that invalidated the petition, leading some to believe that the assault was an act of retaliation.

As of the time this report was filed, the Lagos State Police Command had not released an official statement. Attempts to contact the command’s spokesperson, Benjamin Hundeyin, were unsuccessful.
