Peter Obi, former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, has commended Abdullahi Umar Ganduje for stepping down from his position as National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Ganduje, a former governor of Kano State, tendered his resignation on Friday. While he officially cited health challenges as the reason for his exit, sources suggest that the move might also be linked to political developments ahead of the 2027 elections, particularly discussions around President Bola Tinubu’s potential running mate.

In a statement posted on X (formerly Twitter) on Saturday, Obi described Ganduje’s decision as a responsible step and praised him for putting his health first.

“I just read a report that Dr. Abdullahi Ganduje has resigned as the National Chairman of the APC due to health reasons,” Obi wrote. “I applaud his decision to prioritize his well-being. Recognizing one’s limitations and stepping down in such circumstances is both wise and honourable.”

Obi added that Ganduje’s action sets a strong example for others in leadership positions who may also be struggling with health-related challenges.

“By making this choice, he has challenged other leaders to consider whether they are still able to serve effectively,” he said. “Our country faces serious issues that demand leaders who are both mentally sharp and physically capable of acting quickly and decisively.”

Obi, who previously served as governor of Anambra State, stressed that Nigeria can no longer afford a style of leadership marked by frequent medical trips, extended holidays, or absenteeism due to age or illness.

“These factors have continued to hinder our development,” he said, offering his best wishes to Ganduje for a peaceful and fulfilling retirement.
