The Coroner’s Court sitting in Ikorodu, Lagos State, has directed the Director of Public Prosecutions (DPP) to commence legal proceedings against Feyisayo Ogedengbe, the auxiliary nurse who gave an injection to Nigerian singer Ilerioluwa Aloba, popularly known as Mohbad, shortly before his death.

Delivering the verdict, Magistrate C.A. Shotobi ruled that Ogedengbe was not a qualified nurse or licensed health practitioner. She stated that her decision to administer a tetanus injection—without proper authorization—was unlawful and contributed to the complications that led to Mohbad’s death.

Magistrate Shotobi also raised concerns about weak oversight in the healthcare sector, which allows unqualified individuals to perform medical duties without regulation.

Citing Section 29 of the Lagos State Coroner Law, the court called for the prosecution of Ogedengbe on grounds of unlawful medical treatment and gross negligence. The magistrate further emphasized the need for accountability within the medical profession.

The court also criticized the Nigeria Police for failing to act on a petition filed by Mohbad before his death. In that petition, the late singer accused Naira Marley and Sam Larry of assault and threats. The coroner ordered a full investigation to determine whether the authorities were negligent in handling the case.

Additionally, the court pointed to lapses within Mohbad’s family. His father was blamed for arranging a swift burial without conducting an autopsy, while his wife was faulted for attempting to manage his medical condition at home instead of seeking professional care.

Mohbad, a 27-year-old rising star in the Afrobeats scene, died under suspicious circumstances on September 12, 2023. His sudden passing drew widespread public attention and led to the formation of a special investigative panel. Known for his lyrical talent and unique sound, Mohbad earned the admiration of fans both in Nigeria and abroad.
